Oscars : 'Liar's Dice' by Geethu Mohandas is India's official entry for the best foreign language film

National Award winning Hindi Film ' Lias Dice' will be India's offical entry to the Oscars for the best film in foreign language category at the 87th Academy Awards. Liar's Dice, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Geetanjali Thapa, tells the story of a young mother who takes her daughter to Delhi in search of her missing husband.


'Liar's Dice'  has been chosen by a 12-member jury appointed by the Film Federation of India , and out of a record number of 30 shortlisted films. The film is India's Official Entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 87th Academy Awards scheduled to take place on February 22, 2015.

This movie directed by Malayalam actress Geethu Mohandas has won two awards at the 61st National Film Awards 2013-Best Actress for Geetanjali Thapa and Best Cinematography for Rajeev Ravi.

'Liar's Dice' is Geethu Mohandas's directorial venture. She she had previously made short film Kelkkunndo in 2008, which received wide acclaim and awards including  National Film Award in the  Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Non-Feature Film).

'Liar's Dice'  had its world premiere at the 2013 Mumbai Film Festival in October 2013, where it took part in the Indian competition section. Next, it was selected for screening at the Sundance Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. It won a special jury award at Sofia International Film Festival

Four Indians have won individual Oscars -

  • Bhanu Athaiya-Best Costume Design for Gandhi
  • Resul Pookutty- Best Sound Mixing for Slumdog Millionaire 
  • A R Rahman-Best Original Score for Slumdog Milllionaire 
  • A R Rahman and Gulzar- Best Original Song for Slumdog Millionaire's Jai Ho.    


Best Film in Foreing Language category
Three Indian submissions have made it to the final five at the Oscars in the past - Mother India (which lost to the winning film Nights in Cabiria by one vote), Salaam Bombay and Lagaan.
